Getting Started
Gett is the easy-to-use taxi app that lets you book taxis for on-demand (ASAP) and pre-booked rides. Available on iPhone and Android, Gett is the UK’s highest-rated black taxi app.
If you’re in the UK, you can use Gett in most major UK cities — including London, Edinburgh, Manchester, Glasgow, Coventry, Reading and Bournemouth.
Gett is geared for the business professional. Ride in comfort whether it’s private, on-demand, for work, or pre-booked. You can also order 6-seater black cabs to your door — perfect for teams and group events — plus a range of standard and executive cars with your business account. Click right here to learn more about how Gett could save your business time, money, and create happier teams on the road.
You can download the Gett Rider app on any iOS and Android devices. Access the app from your phone here. Make sure you have the latest version of the app — we’re constantly updating our features and adding new releases.
It’s simple. Open the App Store or Google Play on your mobile device, and type ‘Gett’ in the search menu bar. When the app is installed, tap ‘Open’. Once you’re in the Gett app, tap ‘Sign in’ if you already have an account, or tap ‘Register’ to create a new one.
Your safety is our priority. We work primarily with licensed black taxis (also known as ‘hackney carriages’), which are fully regulated by the relevant local licensing authorities across the UK, including TfL in London.
All hackney carriage drivers in the UK are subject to stringent licensing conditions, including thorough CRB and medical checks, as well as regular vehicle compliance checks. Our dedicated Driver Team engages regularly with drivers to make sure they have everything they need to provide you with the safest and best service possible, in compliance with the highest taxi operating standards across the UK.
Of course! All black taxis in London are wheelchair accessible, as are most of our taxis in other UK cities. This excludes a small number of drivers who hold a formal exemption on medical grounds, and who must display an exemption certificate in the vehicle. Disabled passengers can register for priority taxi bookings with Gett via the app assist-Mi, which is downloadable for iOS or Android. In addition, we have a dedicated “WAV” (Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle) ride option for disabled passengers and wheelchair users. This option means you are guaranteed to be assigned a non-exempt driver, and you receive an additional minute of free waiting time to accommodate loading/unloading the wheelchair etc. Simply select WAV from the menu bar.
You can also include in a note to your driver on the booking screen, or give them a call when your cab is in route, to notify them of any specific requirements, for example if you will need help boarding.
All drivers (other than exempt drivers) are required by law to carry any disabled person and provide mobility assistance without making, or proposing to make, any additional charge. If a driver unlawfully refuses to accept your booking or attempts to charge you extra, please report this to us.
While we may love them all, some drivers may not. When ordering, mention in the notes that you are bringing a pet — drivers who can’t pick up pets will know not to accept your request. As long as your pets are clean and safe our drivers are very accommodating!
With regards to assistance dogs, all drivers are required by law to accept assistance dogs, and without charging you any additional fee. This excludes a small number of drivers who hold a formal exemption on medical grounds, and who must display an exemption certificate in the vehicle. If you have an assistance dog and are refused a journey or charged more, please report this to us.
Using the App
Easily. Just open the app, and your pickup location should be automatically displayed if your mobile data or WiFi is switched on. Tap the ‘Where to?’ box to search for your drop-off location, drag the pin to where you are, or use the magnifying glass on the bottom right to search for other popular places nearby. Once you’ve got the right location, tap to select it. This takes you to the next screen.
Select your ride option from the scroll bar, and choose to book your ride for now or later. Add any special requests in the ‘Note to driver’ field. Once you’re done, tap the ‘Order now’ field, and watch your cab make its way to you in real-time on the map.
Yes, you can pre-book a Gett Taxi. You can set your pickup time from one hour all the way up to two weeks in advance, with our future booking feature in the app. After you’ve set your pickup address, just tap ‘Book a future ride’ on the next screen. Then change the date for when you want your ride. We will start looking for a ride for you 10 minutes before your booking automatically, so you don’t need to.
Of course! For London airport transfers, you have the option of booking a Black Taxi (select the ‘Airport Cab’ option) or, for pre-booked rides only, a private hire vehicle (select the ‘Airport Ride’ option). See our Fee Policy for details of fees and waiting time allowances that may apply for airport pickups and drop-offs.
First, try checking if your device’s location settings are switched on. You can also type in the address manually, or drag the pin to exactly where you are. If you’re still having trouble, chat to our 24/7 customer care team via our in-app live chat. They’ll be able to help you out in no time.
Save time and typing by adding your favourite locations. Simply tap the magnifying glass or ‘Where to?’ field, and select ‘favourites’ from the middle field to add your go-to locations. Your saved shortcuts will be available every time you ride — so you can get going faster. Handy, right? You can also add your home and work location separately.
Through the app. You can call your driver by hitting the telephone icon in the app once your cab is booked. If you need to contact your driver after the ride has ended, you can get in touch with our 24/7 customer care, who will make contact for you.
Not at the moment. Currently, you can only request one taxi from a single account. If other people in your group don’t have the Gett app on their phone, you can invite them to download it from the menu — and you’ll both be eligible for our Invite Friends promotion where new riders get money off their first ride and you earn credit towards your next.
Just fill out the ‘Note to driver’ field in the app before booking. Your driver will see all of your requests
once assigned. Feel free to give your driver a call once you’ve booked if you’d rather speak to them directly.
If you have to, you can cancel your cab in the app using the ‘Cancel ride’ button. However, please remember that cancelling your cab three minutes or more after your driver is already on the way may incur a fee. For more details, please see our Fee Policy.
There’s no need to panic. Your past Gett rides and driver’s details stay stored in your ‘rides’ list. If you can’t get through to the driver, you can chat to our 24/7 customer care team via our in-app live chat. They will try and help get your item back to you.
Our customer care team is available 24/7 to answer any questions. Simply tap the ‘Chat with us’ tab in the Gett app menu and you’ll be chatting with a friendly agent in seconds. You can also reach us on 0207 397 4300.

If you invite your friends to join Gett, we’ll reward you with free credit. Tap the parcel icon in the app to share your unique code with friends. When they take their first ride using your code, you’ll get free credit. Your friends also get a discount off their first ride. The more friends you invite, the more you can ride for free. Invite friends is valid for credit card payments only, and credit varies by location.
Payment
The Gett app is free to download and there are no hidden costs. You only pay what the taximeter displays at the end of your journey, plus any additional charges shown to you up-front in the app before you place your booking and also itemised on your receipt.
For more information on the charges that may apply to your booking, including the High Demand Fee and Cancellation Fees, please see the relevant FAQs below and our Fee Policy.
For journeys in Coventry, you can choose between the taximeter or a fixed fare. A fixed fare means you’ll always see the final price of the fare upfront, before you place your order.
Taxi fares are regulated by the applicable local licensing authority, for example TfL for London journeys.
All our black taxi rides are paid by the taximeter (except in Coventry where you can choose a fixed fare). However, you can see an estimate before you order in London and Edinburgh. All in-app meter-based estimates are a best estimate of the final price including any fees and discounts. See our Terms of Service for more information.
We estimate the meter fare by considering current traffic data and expected distance, together with the taxi meter rates at that time of day. However, the final price may be outside of the estimate due to factors out of our control, such as unforeseen congestion, the driver’s choice of route, your preferred route, weather, additional stops and/or diversions. The estimate is a guide only, and not a guarantee. Unfortunately, if the final fare is outside of the estimate, we are unable to provide a refund for any difference.
Yes! If you want to tip your driver, you definitely can. Just use the AutoTip feature in the app. You will need to add your debit or credit card in the app to use this feature. Go to ‘Payment Settings’ and adjust your AutoTip amount, which will be added automatically after every Gett ride when paying by card. Just be mindful that you can only add or adjust your AutoTip amount before your trip starts. Our drivers receive 100% of every tip you give.
This is a fee charged during periods of high customer demand and/or low driver availability.
The amount of the High Demand Fee will always be shown to you up-front in the app before you place your booking, and also itemised on your receipt.
The purpose of the High Demand Fee is to ensure that our platform provides an efficient marketplace for matching drivers and customers at the busiest times/locations. The fee is a vital part of Gett’s ability to function as an effective marketplace, balancing supply and demand for Taxis throughout the day. In practical terms, this means that at peak times we enable drivers to charge customers a fee in return for making themselves unavailable to be flagged down on their way to the customer’s pick-up point, giving the customer precedence over other potential passengers competing for a Taxi on the street (referred to as Driver High Demand Fee). Gett may also charge customers an additional fee to help regulate supply and demand on the platform at these times (referred to as Gett High Demand Fee).
You can find more information on the High Demand Fee in the table in clause 9 of the User Terms of Service.
The exact amount of the High Demand Fee payable on a booking will always be shown clearly on the main booking screen (underneath the price estimate). It is also shown in the fee breakdown accessible via the ‘Information’ button next to the price estimate, and is itemised on your receipt.
The amount of High Demand Fee is fixed when you receive the price estimate for your journey, and is included in the price estimate shown on the booking screen. By tapping ‘Order now’, you are agreeing to pay the charges for your booking as indicated on the booking screen, including any applicable High Demand Fee.
We’re a cashless app to make payments as simple as possible. To register your card, go to the menu on the top left corner of your screen in the app. Tap ‘payment settings’ and then choose ‘add debit/credit card’. All your rides will then be charged to that card — so you can hop in, hop out, and get receipts sent straight to your inbox. You’ll never have to worry about stopping at the cashpoint to pay for your cab.
To add a new card, go to your in-app menu tap ‘Payment Settings’. Then tap ‘Add Credit Card’. Finally, enter your new card details and tap ‘Save’.
Remember, always check that you’ve selected the card you prefer to pay with — we will try to take payment from this card automatically when you ride with us.
Open the menu and select ‘Coupon Code’. Enter your code and click ‘add’. Your account will be credited, and your next ride will automatically redeem this code, before charging your card. Coupon codes only work when paying by card, so make sure you’ve registered your card in the app before you ride.
You can find details of your previous orders and how much you were charged in the ‘Rides’ section, under the menu in the Gett app. You can also see a breakdown of your fare in the e-receipt sent directly to you.
If you believe your fare was charged incorrectly, contact our 24/7 customer care through the app menu —please have the details of your request ready including your ride order ID.
To clear an outstanding balance, simply attempt to make another booking by pressing ‘set pickup’. You will be directed to a payment page where you can clear your outstanding balance. As always, our customer care team is available 24/7 through the app if you need help.
SCA payment security
On March 14th 2022, the UK rolled out a new directive of its Payments Service Regulation 2017. This is designed to enhance the security of card payments across the UK and EU, and offer further protection against fraud. The new regulations introduce a new level of security called SCA (Strong Customer Authentication).
SCA is another layer of card security, meaning that some card transactions will now require additional authentication. This procedure will be carried out by your card’s issuing bank, using 3D-Secure verification.
Authentication will be required from time to time, usually after registering a new card. The frequency of these authentications will depend on the decision of your bank. So, when you order a Gett ride, there’s a chance you may need to verify your identity.
If your bank decides that a verification should take place, it could come in various forms. Common options include a one-time passcode sent via SMS, or an identity verification via your banking or credit card app.
The regulation impacts all issuing banks in the UK and the EU – your bank may already have been in touch. We recommend you have a read through any communications received (they probably included terms like ‘SCA’ or ‘3D Secure’) and action any required steps as soon as you can. To make the authentication process easy and successful, we recommend checking that your bank has your correct contact details.
The new authentication process is processed by payment institutions with the highest level of PCI DSS compliance.
You will receive an indication about the failed authentication process on the screen from your bank. If this happens, we recommend trying again, choosing a different payment method or contacting your bank.
Some reasons might include:
– You typed your authentication code in wrong
– You cancelled the authentication process while it was in progress
– You didn’t receive an SMS from your bank
– The process timed out as the authentication wasn’t performed in time
Your bank can ask for authentication whenever it chooses; however, we will try to simplify the process as much as we can.
